Pic's London Marathon

My first Virgin London Marathon

The day is finally here, after all this training.  I woke up to the lovely sunshine rather than to rain which we were having all week.  I walked round to Folkestone Central to meet the others and I was greeted to a locked door at the station and no one was around!!! Talk about a good start to the day.  I was sure I got the time right and soon I saw Dave and Kirsty walking up.  Now it was 5:55am and no sign of opening up.  Then we saw a car pull up and the doors were unlocked.

We found our seats and when we got to Folkestone West we were joined by other fellow runners from the club.  When we reached London Bridge I received some sad news that Becky and Leah were involved in a car accident, they were all safe but everyone was gutted for them and relieved that they were ok.

From the train we made our way to the Blue Start and then we said our goodbyes to Kirsty and Stephen who were in the red start.  That left, Dave Weekes, Nikki and I. We then made our way through and saw the big hot air balloons that you see on the telly. First thing first was to head to toilet and it was then we said goodbye to Dave Weekes. The queue was short which we were chuffed with and then we found a spot to sit down and rest and people watch.  Wasn't long till we had to hand in our baggage to the baggage lorry. Not long to go now!! Another toilet stop was needed but this time the queues were just too long to queue.  Nikki and I saw someone go behind the toilets, so we thought, why don't we join them!!! Problem solved and then we had another sit down and just watched the toilet queue, silly people!!!! Now it was time to go our start and now Nikki and I said goodbye and wished each other luck and we headed to our own pen.  Once in the pen, I made my way near to the front.  Whilst in the pen, got chatting to the others, then off we went.  I had my phone and prepared a text to say that I was off when I reached the start line which I had sent to my Dad, Lucy, Tim and Will so they knew when to expect me.  It only took me about 5 minutes to get to the start which I was chuffed about.  I was also surprised that I was actually able to run rather than walk. The crowds had started straight away and were cheering.  I made the most of running on paths to have a clear run.  When we reached a hump, everyone shouted HUMP.  At 3 mile point we were joined by the red zone and had some good natured booing!!! when we joined up, my pace was still good and I jumped on the middle reservation and ran down there.

My first point to look forward to was mile 6, the Cutty Sark, where I had my Mum and Dad, Sue, Trev, Pam, Clive, Tim, Will, Emma, Lauren and Louis and Kirsty's mum and Dad. It was wow when I saw the Cutty Sark and I kept to the right where I was told to go.  I got round the bend and then I saw my Mum and Dad and the crew!!! YAY, they all gave me a massive cheer when I went by. By this point, I have been running quite fast running 8 minute something miles.

The next landmark, was seeing Tower Bridge and that was amazing, nearly half way now.  My legs were getting tired and heavy and I did stop and took a pic.  I am now starting to struggle, every now and then I had to stop and walk and then pick up again to run.

Along the way, Dave Walbrook caught me up, had a little chat and then he went on his way.  Now I had to get over to the other side to the left to run by Tina's usual spot at the 16 mile mark.  I could see Catherine and was waving like mad and then I saw the others, Tina, Grahame and Poppy and got more cheers.

In front of me I could see a girl with GB on her back and she got a massive cheer, so I was trying to work out who she was.  Then next minute I hear my name being shouted frantically it was Mum and Dad and the crew as I run past them without realising and managed to wave just in time.  They were at 16.5 mile mark. Looking back on the video footage it was the crew that was cheering the GB lady lol.

Now I was starting to really struggle, again was stopping to walk and then run.  I then saw Gary, friends husband on the way, had a little chat and off I went.  I walked again and then Gary caught me up and encouraged me to get going again.  Each time I stopped my name got shouted to keep going which was great.  At around 18 mile mark, Stephen caught me up and went by.

It was a hot day and each time I got water I poured it down my neck.  There were times when we were running through the tunnels and I lost satellite signal.  There also the sight of men doing their business in the tunnels!! Also there were the chants through the tunnels.

Now I was getting a bit fed up, I was walking and again I could my name being shouted, me thinking yeah, yeah and then I noticed it was Faye, YAY, was good to see her and Faye got me running again!!! This was around the 20 mile mark.

Wasn't too long before I was running along the Embankment and I could see Big Ben which means I was nearly done woohoo.

Now I could see the 800m sign and it just took forever getting to the next metre sign and now the end was in sight woohoo!!! It was such a relief seeing the finish YAY. Now I was over the finish line at long last and I did feel a little choked.  I got my much deserved medal!!!  My time 4:23.56, PB by 11 minutes.  I was really chuffed, getting a PB and got my time around 4.20 which I was aiming for.  So am very happy.

I then saw Dave Walbrook and I ran up to him and gave him a hug, was great to see him.  Dave said he was feeling a little rough and I took him to get our pic taken with a medal at the photo stand.  Then we saw Alan Fletcher another Folkestone Runner.  Dave then made his way to get his massage and Alan said that he was getting a massage so I followed so I could get one too.  I did try calling my Dad, put the phone was just not ringing.  We headed to Cancer Research and there I got my massage.  Afterwards it felt like I had new legs.  I got my phone and noticed I had lots of missed calls.  I managed to phone my Dad back to tell him I was on my way.  It was a nightmare getting through the crowds and managed to get to the letter F for Folkestone.  There everyone was waiting for me and was worried and there was me getting my free massage!!! I then got see my Mum and Dad, the crew and there was Dave, Kirsty and Malc who had also finished.  Everyone had great runs and all were beaming!!!

Dave, Lucy and I decided to go and meet Rona.  But heading out was a complete nightmare, we just couldn't move and was told to go back.  Then the rain came, that was all we needed after running a marathon!!!  We decided to give up and just head back on the train.

I have completed the London Marathon and NEVER AGAIN - (until I change my mind a few days later).

Club night

Now I am starting to take it really easy.  So tonight, instead of doing a session I headed out with Andy, Stephen, Paul and Ray who are also doing London Sunday.  We headed to the Leas, down Remembrance Hill, through the Coastal Park, up Sandgate Hill and back to the club.  My watch took its time finding satellite and didn't pick it till we got to the bell on the seafront.

Actual distance was 4.5
My watch 2.95 miles

Brighton Marathon

Today was Brighton Marathon, I had given up my place so I can do London Marathon next week.  So makes a nice change for me to watch and not run. Tim and Margaret were running from the club, so I went down to Brighton with Tim, Kirsty, Will and Emma to cheer Tim and Margaret on. I also sold my place on Ebay and had to hand it over.  When we got there, Tim was soon getting tetchy and Kirsty and I were thinking, that is going to be us next week getting all nervous.  It was chilly so we decided to get a warm drink to warm up, Tim decided to have a water. When opening the water, Tim had managed to let the water shoot out and drown Kirsty which made her jump spilling her hot drink on her hand.  It certainly made us all laugh!!!  We soon said our goodbyes to Tim and wished him luck.

We got to our position on the edge of the park and were waiting for Tim to go by.  We were standing near a banner which said you have completed 0.22 miles and only 26 miles to go!!!  This was talking point for runners when they went by.  We failed to see Tim and we don't know how we missed him, as he is tall!!  We decided to move on, hoping to catch Tim, on the way I spotted a short cut and the runners were in the same start as Tim so we decided to wait. Only a few minutes later Tim arrived armed with his water, he had so much fun getting Kirsty wet, he decided to aim fire at Will!!!! Pay back for Tim was nearly stumbling over a guy in front of him.

We then decided to head to the pier area and on our way we spotted Margaret and gave her a good cheer.  We thought we head to the pier to catch a glimpse of the elite runners and we just timed it right. We decided to stay put and wait for Tim and as soon as he came along we all cheered and shouted.

Then we crossed the road to find a spot on the final stretch, waiting for the elite to come through. We didn't have long to wait and there after we were cheering for everyone that went by.  As soon as we saw Tim, we all went hysterical getting his attention.  At this point, Tim had his Ipod on and looked in discomfort.  Again Kirsty and I were thinking, thats going to be us next week!  We then headed to the reunion area and headed to the letter T, (T for Tim), we were hoping that Tim had remembered!!! When we saw Tim, we all went rushing over and gave him a big hug and congratulated him on his massive achievement. He knocked off 30 minutes, finishing in a time of 3hr36, a great time.  He looked very stiff and Kirsty and I went marching on ahead and had to slow down for Tim.  We saw so many people limping.  Now it was time to get something to eat and we went to the Harvester for a well deserved meal.  After the meal we decided to head back to the bus and we stopped to see the runners coming in.  At this point, it was around the 5.30/6hr mark.  Kirsty had fallen in love with the paramedic at the bottom, because he was clapping everyone and we took the mick!!! On the way to the bus, Tims lace came undone and bless him, Will got down on his knees to do it up. Thats love!!!

Watching the marathon just made it so real for me that I was going to run 26.22 miles next week.  We all had such a good day out.

Tonbridge Open Track Race

Yesterday Lucy put on the forum that she was going to the Tonbridge Open Track meeting and asked if anyone else wanted to go. So I took up her offer and joined Lucy and Dave to Tonbridge.  When arriving, the facilities were amazing they had everything on offer for all sports as well as athletics.  It turns out that Tonbridge is going to be the training camp for the Australians for the Olympics.

I wasn't sure what races to enter as I haven't been on the track this year, what I did know I didn't really fancy doing loads of laps around the track.  So I decided to enter the 1 mile race with Lucy which is 4 laps around the track and thought that would be enough.  When entering we had to enter our estimated time, so I put down 8 minutes.  They do this, so your running with people who are at the same pace.  On this occasion there wasn't enough people so we all ran together.  Lucy and I were the only adults in this race I believe. We were running against girls as young as 14/15 years, half my age!!  So we stood in line and set off at the sound of the gun. We were running against the wind and it was raining.  The younger ones soon pulled away and I got lapped. It was tough running, I am not used to running short distances, going flat out pretty much.  The girl who won was Bobby, she has won all her races including national level. So I was running with girls who are super quick.  What was very nice, Bobby came over and shook my hand which was very sweet. I was last over the line. I later learnt from Lucy that was the done thing to do at track.

It was the first time I had run in my track shoes, had no problems and were absolutely fine.

Lucy said that she was considering doing the 3000m. I knew I certainly didn't want to run that far, mentally that seems running for miles around the running track. In my head it seems further than running all those miles I do on the road. In the end Lucy decided against it, she felt a little niggle and didn't want to push it.

I decided to run another race, 600m, which is a lap and a half.  I hadn't a clue what time to put down for this race, so Lucy and Dave guessed at 2.30minutes. This time the race was split depending on speed. It was tough again in the wind and rain. It was over quite quick.

Time for 1 mile 7.25.42
600m around 2.30

Running with a difference

Today for my run I was running with my Union Jack head band as I wanted to make sure that I would be comfortable. So off I went and I didn't even notice that I was wearing them.  Today I was running on my own and I did see a couple of people I knew along the way and got some smiles.  I would of thought I would of got lots of strange looks but I didn't, hopefully they knew I was training for the marathon.

At mile 11, Gilly met me to finish the run with me. I did make her chuckle.  I did tell her that I would be wearing them but I don't think she seriously thought I would go through with it.

I had planned to do 13 miles but my route was short and I wasn't going to make it up for a sake of a mile.

5 miles along the canal path

Today I couldn't make the club so I met up with Kirsty and we ran along the canal path, 2.5 miles before turning back.  Kirsty wanted to run about 8:30 pace as she is running Folkestone 10 tomorrow and wanted to aim for 1hr25 which is 8:30 pace.

Tonight we did our training along the seafront so that made a nice change.  We did 3 x 1 mile and the idea was to be consistent and to run a bit slower than 10k pace.

High mileage

Yesterday Kirsty mentioned that she was going for a run this morning and said that she wanted to do 13 miles.  I  thought it would be nice to join her, initially I wasn't planning on doing 13 miles and thought why not.  Ian also joined us. We met at Radnor Park and did my usual route.  My legs were feeling a bit tired this morning after doing the race yesterday. So I was a bit slower than normal.  The route nearly finished at bottom of Zig Zag path, I thought I have done enough miles, so no need to run up it!!

I have added up my mileage for this week and it was very high especially when I am starting to taper off now.  I have had a week off and it has been glorious sunshine which has made me want to be outside and run. This week has been my highest mileage totalling 43.14 miles.  I have had two rest days this week, Wednesday and Friday.

So from now on I am tapering.  Going to have a rest day tomorrow.

Spinning.
